Technical Requirements

Browser

Use a modern browser: Chrome (recommended), Firefox, Safari, or Edge. Make sure it's up to date. Avoid using browsers in private/incognito mode.

Internet Connection

A stable connection of at least 5 Mbps upload is recommended. Wired connections are more reliable than WiFi. Avoid public networks if possible.

Microphone

Built-in laptop microphones work fine. External mics or headsets often provide better quality. Use the test button to verify it's working.

Camera

Only required if your instructor enables it. Position yourself so your face is clearly visible with good lighting. Avoid backlighting (windows behind you).

Practice Questions

The setup screen includes a practice question option. This lets you experience the prep time and recording flow without affecting your actual viva.

Practice questions:
  • Use the same timing as your actual viva
  • Are not submitted to your instructor
  • Help you get comfortable with the interface
  • Can be repeated as many times as you need

Setting Up Your Space

Quiet Location

Background noise is distracting and can affect audio quality. Find a room where you won't be interrupted.

Good Lighting

Natural light from the front or side works best. Avoid sitting with a bright window behind you.

Minimize Distractions

Close other tabs and apps. Put your phone on silent. Let others know you're recording.

Comfortable Position

Sit at a desk if possible. Make sure you're comfortable since you'll be there for the duration.

Planning Your Time

Once you start the viva, you must complete it in one session. Check the estimated duration on your dashboard and add buffer time.

Typical Durations
Quick viva (3 questions)~10-12 minutes
Standard viva (5 questions)~20-25 minutes
Comprehensive viva (7 questions)~40-45 minutes

Includes setup time, prep time per question, and recording time. Add 5-10 minutes for initial equipment checks and practice.

Browser Permissions

Your browser will ask for permission to access your microphone (and camera if required). You must allow these for the viva to work.

Blocked permissions?

If you accidentally denied access, click the camera/mic icon in your browser's address bar and change the setting to "Allow". Then refresh the page.

What to Expect

The setup screen shows you:

  • Number of questions you'll answer
  • Prep time per question (how long to think before recording)
  • Recording time per question (how long you can speak)
  • Whether camera is required
  • Whether a preparation space is available
  • Any context materials you'll have access to

Troubleshooting

Microphone not detected

Check that it's plugged in. Go to your system sound settings and make sure the correct input device is selected. Try refreshing the page.

Camera shows black screen

Another app might be using it. Close video calls or other tabs. Check if a physical camera cover is closed.

Page won't load

Try a different browser. Disable browser extensions temporarily. Make sure you're logged into VivaEdu through your institution.
